TBH Trust for Democracy Press Statement
3rd March 2016
TBH Trust for Democracy condemns the ignorant act of MACC for promoting main suspect of Teoh Beng Hock’s case Hishammudin Hashim for three times under the situation where the truth has not been revealed and his charges being cleared. This attitude is clearly ignoring the sentence made by the Court of Appeal on 5th Sept 2014 that one or more individuals are involved in causing Teoh Beng Hock’s death. This is not only bringing harm to the Teoh’s family for the third time but once again corroded the integrity of our nation’s democratic institutions.
Unscrupulous bureaucratic system which gives birth to privileges such as the culture of impunity and lack of professional accountability among civil servants has severely tarnished our public institutions and have clearly violated principles of good governance. Not to mention this equates to permission to continuous power abuse by certain bureaucrats, this will also further corrode the law and order of our nation which will resulted in harming the national interest as well as citizen’s rights. All of these are only a tip of the iceberg of the corrupted system which is also causing numerous occurrence of death and corrupt practices within public sectors and the inability to close these cases with sound and justifiable outcome.
The MACC and the police force were indecisive to convict the Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak who is involved in the 2.6 billion political donation scandal while the newly appointed Attorney-General hurriedly dismissed the PM’s conviction without sound justification. In addition, after the president of the Public Accounts Committee is swapped, the 1MDB scandal is not further discussed again. PM Najib Tun Razak is literally untouchable by any of the law enforcement authorities. This is the consequence of the lack of institutions to hold the leaders accountable for their misconduct. We solemnly urge the MACC to have the promotion revoked, Hishammudin Hashim sanctioned until the result of the investigation is out. The Barisan Nasional government has to stop the further deterioration of the accountability system and to carry out the constitutional responsibility to restore the corrupted social justice and citizens’ freedom and rights.
