In view of the failure of police and attorney general in carrying out the verdict of the court of appeal that ‘a person or persons were responsible for his death’, Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy and DAP Socialist Youth hereby announce to organize a Justice for Beng Hock protest at the parliament entrance on 19 November 2014, Wednesday, 1030am.
We urge concerned citizens to take half day leave to participate in the protest at Parliament, showing your support for the Teoh family. After five years, the verdict of court of appeal gives a silver lining of hope to Teoh family, nevertheless the unprofessional and non-neutral stand of police force and attorney general may cause all the efforts of pursuing justice end up in vain. Thus, we hope that member of the public solidly stand behind Teoh family, mobilizing citizens to join the protest to pressure the government to arrest those who are responsible for Beng Hock’s death.
Besides, we express our great concern over the dissatisfaction of Ahmad Sarbani’s family on the mishandling of Sarbani’s death by the government. We urge the family members to contact us quickly, we are willing to provide legal and other form of assistance. Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy had contacted Sarbani’s wife Maziah and we will need further discussion with the family members. We emphasise that defending human rights transcends racial and class borders, both Beng Hock and Sarbani died mysteriously at MACC, this is totally not acceptable in a country that upholds rule of law and democracy principle!
The court of appeal judges Mohd Arif, Mah Weng Kwai and Hamid Sultan had overturned the coroner’s open verdict on 5 September 2014. Mohd Arif said ‘the death of Beng Hock was a result of which was accelerated by an unlawful act or acts of person unknown, inclusive of MACC officers involved in the arrest and investigation of the deceased’. He said the Inspector General of Police must commence investigations while the Attorney General must frame charges deemed fit. Hamid stressed that the MACC was criminally liable and could not be immune from prosecution, those responsible must be charged even with circumstantial evidence.
Soon after the verdict of the court of appeal, the police had formed a special team to re-investigate Beng Hock’s death. However, police officers came to Teoh family’s house to search for hand written note of Beng Hock, we suspect this is to ascertain the suspicious note which emerged in the final hour of the inquest process, so it seems to probe from the angle of commit suicide. At the same time, the police took statement from Beng Hock’s wife and in November, Kulai member of parliament Teo Nie Ching was being investigated by police for saying that the IGP was incompetent as he failed to capture the murderer. All these prove that the police did not seriously look for the murderer of Beng Hock and seemingly to let the murderer get out of the hook.
