Email campaign urges Anwar to honour two-year promise
The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) today launched the “Email Anwar” public campaign, inviting people to write directly to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and demand that he honour his promise, explain how the government investigated Teoh Beng Hock’s death and clarify why no one has yet been held criminally accountable.
On 1 August 2024, following a meeting with Teoh Beng Hock’s family, Anwar announced that the government had agreed for the police to reopen the investigation into the case. He assured the family that the investigation would be conducted transparently, fairly and without interference, while taking into account the Court of Appeal’s 2014 ruling.
At the same time, Anwar promised the Teoh family that the investigation would not take longer than one to two years.
However, in May 2025, the Attorney General’s Chambers classified the investigation as requiring “no further action” (NFA), citing insufficient evidence. As a result, the family has still not received the truth.
Koong Hui Yein, Chairperson of the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement, said:
“Anwar’s promise to the Teoh family came with a clear deadline, and that two-year deadline has now passed. He must give the family and the Malaysian public an open and honest account of the investigation’s findings. This promise must not be allowed to become another empty promise.”
The public campaign calls on Prime Minister Anwar to take the following actions:
- Give the Teoh family the explanation they were promised
Provide Teoh Beng Hock’s family with a formal and comprehensive briefing on the findings and latest status of the investigation initiated following the commitment made in August 2024. - Account publicly for the investigation
Clearly explain to the Malaysian public what the authorities investigated, what conclusions were reached and why no prosecution has been brought to date. - Ensure a genuine criminal investigation
Direct the police to reopen the investigation into Teoh Beng Hock’s death under legal provisions relating to murder, culpable homicide or other appropriate criminal offences. The investigation must properly address the findings of the Court of Appeal.
Members of the public may visit the campaign website, provide basic information to generate a personalised email and send it directly to the Prime Minister using their own email account.
