Press Statement by Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy 9 September 2014

In response to the on-going leadership crisis in Selangor, Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy urges all political parties to defend our democratic system, whereby heads of government must be decided by elected representatives voted in by the people.

It has been a practice since 1957 that the majority parties of the House of Representative and the State Assemblies decide the candidates for the Prime Minister and Menteri Besar/Chief Ministers respectively, therefore the current political leaders are morally obliged to defend the foundation laid by our forefathers.

Members of civil society should also stand by pro-democracy parties and uphold the principles that the sovereign power is vested in the people.
