Uphold the Spirit of Lim Kit Siang from 15 Years Ago — Reject MACC’s Public Relations Show
[Press statement by Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement on 18 July 2025 in Kuala Lumpur.]
The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) believes that an apology does not help uncover the truth or deliver justice in the Teoh Beng Hock case. The Malaysian people should uphold the spirit of former DAP National Leader Lim Kit Siang from 15 years ago and firmly reject the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) insincere public relations show.
On July 16, 2010, marking the first anniversary of Teoh Beng Hock’s death, then-MACC Chief Commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed issued a Chinese-language statement, expressing that the MACC “shares the same sorrow and disappointment as Teoh Beng Hock’s family” and feels “pain and sadness” over the tragic incident.
The statement also claimed that the MACC would comply with the findings of the inquest and would not protect those involved. Abu Kassim further emphasized that the MACC had taken steps to “enhance safety measures and improve procedures regarding the handling of witnesses,” to ensure such incidents would not recur.
At the time, former DAP National Leader Lim Kit Siang issued a statement criticizing the MACC for waiting an entire year before expressing condolences, calling it insincere. He also condemned MACC lawyer Abdul Razak for telling the inquest that Teoh Beng Hock died by suicide — a statement completely at odds with Abu Kassim’s remarks.
Then and now, 15 years later, the MACC continues to put on public relations shows. This time, though they added the word “apology” and offered “goodwill contribution”, they still refuse to address the conduct of the officers who detained and interrogated Teoh Beng Hock — the very individuals most likely responsible for his neck injuries and fatal fall, yet who remain unpunished to this day.
Lim Kit Siang once said during Teoh Beng Hock’s memorial service that if Pakatan Harapan came to power in Putrajaya, it would establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry within 100 days to reinvestigate the case and restore justice for Teoh and his family.
We now urge Prime Minister Anwar’s government, which DAP is a part of, to uphold that spirit and accept the Teoh family’s call to invite internationally renowned criminal investigation experts to Malaysia to reinvestigate the case.
The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement must also point out that the so-called “reforms” announced by the MACC are purely cosmetic and lack any substantive meaning.
Two years after Teoh Beng Hock’s death in MACC custody, a Royal Malaysian Customs officer, Ahmad Sarbani, also died in the Kuala Lumpur MACC building after being questioned. When CCTV footage was presented in court, the segment showing Sarbani’s fall was found to have been deliberately deleted.
Only a full investigation to uncover the perpetrators behind Teoh Beng Hock’s death and prosecute them according to the law can restore public confidence in the MACC. Otherwise, every suspect or witness entering the MACC for questioning will fear for their own safety.
We call on the public to attend the 16th Anniversary Memorial and Forum for Teoh Beng Hock at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, at the first floor exhibition hall, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH). Let us all reject the government’s “No Further Action (NFA)” conclusion and press the government to accept our three demands: Truth, Justice, and Institutional Reform.

秉持15年前林吉祥精神拒绝反贪会公关秀
[赵明福民主促进会文告，2025年7月18日于吉隆坡发出]
赵明福民主促进会认为，道歉无助于还原赵明福案件的真相和实现正义，马来西亚人民应该秉持15年前前行动党全国领袖林吉祥的精神，严厉拒绝反贪会毫无诚意的公关秀。
2010年7月16日适逢赵明福逝世一周年纪念日，时任反贪会主席阿布卡欣发出一篇中文文告，表达反贪会“和已故赵明福家人一样同样的悲伤和失望”，对不幸事件“感到痛苦于悲伤”。
文告也说明，反贪会遵守验尸庭的判决，不袒护涉案者。阿布卡欣还强调反贪会已经采取行动，“提升安全措施及增加处理证人方面的程序”，确保此类案件不再重演。
当时，前行动党全国领袖林吉祥发出文告，批评反贪会迟至一年后才表达哀悼并非出自真心。他也指责反贪会律师阿都拉萨在验尸庭上指赵明福死于自杀，与阿布卡欣的言论完全有别。
15年前与15年后，反贪会一如既往做公关秀，这次虽然多了“道歉”两字和提出慰问金。反贪会依然避而不谈拘留和盘问赵明福的官员，他们最可能导致赵明福颈项受伤及坠楼而死，却至今逍遥法外。
林吉祥曾在赵明福公祭上说过，希盟一旦入主布城，将在百日内成立皇委会重查赵明福案件，还赵明福和家属一个公道。我们呼吁安华政府（行动党是该政府一部分）根据林吉祥精神，接受赵家邀请知名国际刑事调查专家来马重查赵明福案件的诉求。
赵明福民主促进会也必须指出，反贪会所谓的“改革措施“只有字面而没有实质意义。
赵明福死于反贪会扣留所后，两年后一位关税局官员Ahmad Sarbani在吉隆坡反贪会接受盘问后死于反贪会。当CCTV录影记录提呈法庭时，Ahmad Sarbani坠落的那个片段却人为地被删除。
唯有彻查赵明福案件，揪出致死赵明福的凶手及依法制裁之，反贪会才能恢复其公信力，否则踏入反贪会接受调查的嫌犯和证人都将人人自危。
我们呼吁公众踊跃出席7月19日星期六晚上8点于隆雪华堂邝松厅举办的赵明福逝世16周年追思会暨讲座会，齐声拒绝政府的“无须跟进(NFA)“调查结果，施压政府接受我们的三大诉求 – 追求真相、实现正义和制度改革。
