The speaker is the Commissioner of Malaysian Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) Mr. Jerald Joseph. A veteran human rights activist who involved in grass root education with various community including orang asli for decades.
In the past few years, Jerald and other commissioners inspected the conditions of detention centres and lockup throughout Malaysia. They identified problems such as unhygienic and smelly detention cells, and unhealthy foods.
In this talk, he will share his insight on these problems and challenges, discusses how to protect the rights of detainees in detention centres and lockups.
This is the fourth series talk on right to not subject to torture organized by TBHTD with the aim of promoting public awareness on on torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in Malaysia.
The weekly series started on 29 July, covering topics such as the international anti-torture movement, United Nations Convention against Torture, domestic laws and rules relating to detention and rights of detainees, and the problems and challenges of protecting rights in detention centre in Malaysia.
