Press Statement by Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement on 15 July 2024 in Kuala Lumpur.
Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement condemns the police violence against walk for justice participants at the Jalan Parlimen, Kuala Lumpur.
While blocking the members of walk for justice from accessing to the main gate of the Parliament, several participants were manhandled, pushed by the police and fell to the ground, and Teoh Lee Lan was also pushed to the ground and cried out in pain.
Another female organising committee member had the collar of her clothes grabbed by the police, and even though her neck was being choked, they did not let go for a long time. This caused her necklace to break and left marks on her neck.
We will send a bill to the unity government, demanding the Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution to make a compensation for the damage of the necklace and for medical treatment for the female member.
It is to our surprise that a government led by reformists beginning their struggle in the streets is condoning violence against peaceful rally participants today, violating their constitutional right to peaceful assembly and right to property.
We do not rule out the possibility of taking legal actions against the police officers involved in the violent actions.
We urge members of the public to continue to show your unwavering support for the justice for Beng Hock movement. Tomorrow (16 July), please join the river-side memorial for all custodial death victims at 6pm at the bridge next to the Bar Council office, and the Teoh Beng Hock memorial night at 8pm at the KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.
The struggle goes on!
