Email Anwar: Honour your promise to Teoh Beng Hock’s family
Seventeen years have passed since Teoh Beng Hock died after being questioned overnight at the Selangor headquarters of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
On 1 August 2024, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met Beng Hock’s family. He said that the police would reopen the investigation and publicly guaranteed that it would be conducted fairly and transparently, without interference, and would take account of the Court of Appeal’s findings. He also assured that the investigation would not take more than one or two years.
Two years have now passed.
Yet the family received no detailed account of what the police investigated, what evidence was examined, why the investigation focused on wrongful confinement, or how the decision was reconciled with the Court of Appeal’s finding that unlawful acts caused Beng Hock’s death.
After seventeen years, Beng Hock’s family should not have to keep asking the same questions.
Prime Minister Anwar must honour his promise and give the family a clear, public and honest answer.

What happened to Teoh Beng Hock?
Teoh Beng Hock died after being questioned overnight at the Selangor headquarters of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
He entered the building as a witness. He never returned home.
September 2014
An unlawful death
In 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that Teoh Beng Hock’s death resulted from “an unlawful act or acts of person or persons unknown”, including MACC officers involved in his arrest and investigation.
Despite this finding, no one has been held criminally responsible for his death.

Prime Minister’s promise
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met Beng Hock’s family. He said that the government would reopen the investigation and pledged that the case would be resolved within one to two years.
He also said that the investigation would be transparent, fair, free from outside interference and guided by the Court of Appeal’s findings.

“No further action”
The family was later informed that the investigation had been classified as “no further action”.
They were not given a full and satisfactory explanation of what was investigated, what was found or why no prosecution followed.
