[PS] The Teoh Beng Hock Case: Where are the answers? Where is the direction?

The Teoh Beng Hock Case: Where are the answers? Where is the direction?
[Statement by the Teoh Family, issued in Kuala Lumpur on 10 December 2025]

We, the family of Teoh Beng Hock, welcome the firm stance finally taken by DAP Secretary-General Loke Siew Fook on the reform agenda, especially his emphasis that the issue of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) “must have answers and a clear direction.” His remark that he is prepared to resign from his government post in exchange for reform reflects strong determination.

However, we would like to ask the Secretary-General: Where are the answers for the Teoh Beng Hock case? Where is the direction? Does he also have the resolve to relinquish his government position in order to demand from Prime Minister Anwar an answer regarding the Teoh Beng Hock case?

Five years ago, former DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng stated at the memorial service that if Pakatan Harapan were to return to power, there would be a set time frame for reopening and resolving Beng Hock’s case. He stressed that DAP would never abandon Teoh Beng Hock and would never let those involved off the hook. Why is it that five years later, there is still no answer, no direction, and no deadline?

The promise of reform has never been a slogan. It is a responsibility that must be fulfilled. What the people care about is not whether politicians can continue to hold positions in the Cabinet, but whether the country is truly moving toward strengthening its system of justice and whether wrongdoers are prosecuted according to the law, so that human rights violations will not be repeated.

We call on DAP to uphold the same level of determination on both the UEC issue and the Teoh Beng Hock case, and to implement fairness, justice, credibility, and institutional accountability.

DAP must understand that the reason the case still stirs public emotions after so many years is not because it is merely a single incident, but because this bloodshed symbolizes the basic bottom line a nation must uphold—truth must be allowed to surface, and institutions must be capable of correcting their own wrongs.

On the road toward institutional reform, every promise must withstand scrutiny, and every period of silence must be replaced with transparency. Ultimately, the success or failure of a government is not judged by how many positions it holds, but by whether it fulfils its responsibilities to the people.

Justice for Beng Hock must be made visible. We hope that the DAP will support the Teoh family with “love, patience, and trust,” and urge Prime Minister Anwar to allow international forensic investigation experts to reopen the case, so that the perpetrator responsible for Beng Hock’s death 16 years ago in the Selangor MACC office may finally be brought to justice.
