During his term as Bar Council president, he was an outspoken leader of society who strongly pushed for setting up an Independent Police Complaints and Misconducts Commission (IPCMC).
In 2005, in addition, he became the first Bar Council president to organize a peaceful march to mark World Human Rights Day.
In 2010 he was appointed chairman of the Penang Government’s legal advisory committee to look into restoring local elections in the state.
