Press Statement by Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy on 14 October 2018

Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy condemns former Prime Minister Najib Razak for incessantly distancing himself from the death of Teoh Beng Hock at Selangor MACC headquater in 2009.

In fact, all clues showed that the occurence of Teoh’s death were associated with Najib’s political aspiration in regaining the Selangor state, which lost to Pakatan Rakyat in the 12th General Election. Later, his handling of Teoh’s case also caused the travesty of justice in the political death and the long-lasting tarnish of criminal justice system in the country.

We urge the new government, while re-open the case of Teoh Beng Hock, to fully investigate Najib’s role in the unwanted tragedy that shocked the nation. This should include all his communication with and orders given to Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The new investigation team has an important mission. It must discover the mastermind behind the Putrajaya who ordered the MACC to initiate the big scale investigation against the seven Selangor Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state assemblymen (ADUNs), eventually violated the rights of Teoh and caused his death.

Najib can never disassociate with the political motivated case. When he was installed as the chairperson of UMNO Selangor liaison committee, he vowed to seize Selangor government at whatever cost. Because of his combative tone, when the seven Selangor PR ADUNs were suddenly investigated by MACC, many worried that Barisan Nasional would use tactics below the belt to overthrow the Selangor PR government.

It is worth to note that the Perak PR state government collapsed quickly in February 2009, five months before the death of Teoh Beng Hock. Coincidentally, the incident happened, although unnoticeably, right after the Perak MACC launched investigation against two Perak PR ADUNs, namely Changkat Jering ADUN Mohd Osman Mohd Jailu and Behrang ADUN Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi.

On 4th February 2009, the then Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak delightfully held a press conference to announce that four ADUNs had crossed over to BN, which including the above two ADUNs that still under the investigation of MACC, Jelapang ADUN Hee Yit Foong and Bota ADUN Nasarudin Hashim.

The question is that, what was the connection between Najib and Perak MACC? Moreover, the strategy that use MACC to overthrow the elected state government in Perak in February, is akin to the operation of Selangor MACC five months later. Many smell the rats, the elements of politics is too obvious.

Furthermore, the Selangor MACC mobilised 33 investigators to probe the alleged misappropriation of state fund allocated to seven PR ADUNs, for instance the purchase of 1,500 unit national flags amounted RM2,400 that involved Teoh’s boss, state exco Ean Yong Hian Wah. But the scale of the investigation team was far more bigger than the first investigation against Najib on 1MDB, which amounted RM2.6 billion.

Teoh, who was only a witness of the probe, was highhandedly arrested by MACC officers and interrogated until midnight. His neck was left with bruises as a result of manual strangulation. The fact is, he was tortured and deprived his life in the MACC Selangor headquarter.

The “anti-corruption move” of Perak MACC has essentially contributed to political instability of Perak PR government, consequently dented the democracy and entailed a constitutional monarchy crisis in the state. The “anti-corruption operation” of Selangor MACC unusually highly motivated, the MACC officers were so overzealous to “accomplish the mission” even at the expense of a young man’s life.

Who can really shed the light on the questions relating to the destruction of democracy in Perak and the deprivation of the life of Teoh Er Jia’s father? We see the clues are surrounding Najib, and he should stand up and be accountable for it.
